The Timekeeper

Tick Tock. That would be the sound of the clock, not time spent doing the Whoa… I have an infant and a toddler, which means I am inevitably chasing something all day long. To avoid the crash of the Gilbert household, I have my own version of “The Precious”. My Apple watch. ( “Insert the harpy music and sun rays beaming here” )  Burnt food, wet clothes, and cranky children are all a thing of the past. Okay, maybe the cranky children not so much. Infant, toddler… remember? They are great kids, but they do have their moments! I schedule my life on the watch. For the everyday household chores I use it as a timer so I do not forget the food that is cooking, the clothes that need to go in the dryer, or the sweet chime of the nap time reminder.

It’s 8 am and Barrett is going to go outside. That’s not a suggestion, that is a statement of fact and these are the phases of the “Outside Mommie!” timeline. 8:01 front door wiggle begins. 8:02 circling the foyer. 8:03 reaching takeoff status. 8:04 approaching maximum impatience. Thank goodness I had checked the weather before he woke up and I am prepared! Rain boots and jacket, or t-shirt and bare feet, I am ready for 8:05. Meltdown avoided! I used to spend a lot of time looking for my phone. Kids… need I say more? Even before the kids I would spend a fair amount of time looking under couch pillows, checking the bed covers, even the fridge on occasion. C’mon; admit it, you have too! I never get that sense of panic anymore because my necessary technology lives on my wrist. Texts, calls, emails, and socials are all manageable because they are so accessible. I don’t have to think about a phone, I keep that in one place and I use it when I need to. I really don’t want my kids, husband or friends to see me constantly peeking from behind a phone. I want to stay present and engaged. With the watch, it actually allows me to stay untethered in a sense. And for me, that is very liberating even though communication and day planning is still a must.

As I have said before, I work out. It is for my health and sanity. I am a better mom when I have the energy and stamina to keep up with the littles. I am mentally healthier when I make time for myself and feel physically good. My “Me Time” is always a workout. With my Apple watch, I can program it challenge me to work against the clock. It’s perfect for high intensity interval training, cycling sessions, and running. I can set it to provide the exact amount of time for each circuit or mile I need to reach a certain goal created for that particular type of workout. I can also categorize the exercises and it will track calorie output from that particular workout.

Technology can be a wonderful tool, it can also be a distraction. It is in how you choose to use it. I love the convenience of having something I rely on with me at all times. I do choose to use it as a helper for our household. I live by a schedule day to day, and it does help me to stay organized which is vital given there never seems to be enough time. It is just a watch, but it also helps to keep me active, motivated and connected. It is an investment piece, but I look at as investment in assisting my family live better through as much structure and organization as possible. It helps me take on my world… Everyday!

PS… Apple is not sponsoring this post. I’m sure there are other devices/platforms that work well too. I just happen to be an Apple kind of girl.
